Why I created this site
Writing advice can make a new novelist feel as if there are a hundred rules to obey. I believe principles are more useful than formulas. When you understand why a scene, character or ending works, you can adapt the lesson without losing your own voice.
Begin with the human being
Before the plot becomes frightening, exciting or mysterious, the reader needs someone worth following.
Look beneath the event
The external problem creates movement. The internal choice gives that movement meaning.
Take one useful step
You do not have to repair the whole novel today. Strengthen one character, one scene or one decision.
