The Fastest Way to Create Real Characters

The Fastest Way to Create Real Characters

Start With a Face: The Fastest Way to Build a Character

Struggling to create characters that feel real?

Here’s the truth most writers don’t hear early enough:

You don’t need to invent your character from nothing.

In fact, trying to do that is often what causes the problem.

If your characters feel flat, vague, or lifeless… it’s not because you lack talent.

It’s because you’re starting from a blank page.

Why Blank Pages Create Blank Characters

When you sit staring at an empty screen, waiting for inspiration, your mind reflects that emptiness.

No voice.
No personality.
No movement.

Just… nothing.

That’s why so many new writers feel stuck before they even begin.

The Trick: Start With Someone Real

Instead of inventing a character out of thin air—

Picture a real person.

Better yet, picture a well-known actor.

See them clearly:

  • Their face

  • Their expressions

  • The way they speak

Now write your scene as if they’re performing it.

Something shifts immediately.

Dialogue flows faster.
Reactions feel natural.
Scenes come alive.

You’re no longer guessing—you’re observing.

Why This Works (And Why It’s Not Cheating)

Many writers quietly use this technique.

It’s not copying—it’s a starting point.

Think of it like musicians who begin with a familiar melody, then gradually reshape it into something new.

By the time you’re finished:

The original inspiration is unrecognizable.

Your character has become their own person.

The Real Magic Happens Later

Here’s the part most beginners don’t expect:

Your character often doesn’t fully come alive until late in the story.

That’s normal.

Experienced writers don’t fight this—they use it.

Once the character becomes clear, they go back to the beginning and rewrite with that stronger version in mind.

That’s not failure.

That’s the process.

One Practical Step You Can Use Today

Next time you sit down to write:

👉 Choose an actor you know well
👉 Picture them in your opening scene
👉 Write the scene quickly—don’t overthink it

Then keep going.

Let the character evolve naturally as you write.

Let the Character Become Someone New

As your story grows, your character will change.

Their voice will shift.
Their personality will deepen.
Their decisions will surprise you.

At some point, you’ll realize:

They’re no longer the person you started with.

That’s when the real writing begins.

Final Thought

You don’t need perfect characters to start writing.

You just need something real enough to begin.

Start with a face.

Finish with a person.
